Here I was photographing the family saddle and bridle which had been passed down for several generations. In between shooting stills and video I even managed to have a few pics of myself taken - just for your benefit of course. Yes, I even managed to ride one of their famous horses - well got pulled around at least.
It was always cold, even in our supposededly heated hotel (frozen water pipes thawed by a fire), which we abandoned on our final night and camped out in the Director's office gert at the monastary and at last we had a good and warm nights' sleep with a fire tended by the guard. The turtle is one of the remaining corner markers of the Khan's city in the IX>X centuries - serious -32 and windy (please note my camera froze during this).
We eventually headed back to Ulaanbaatar on the first day of winter. Here we got bogged in the snow after an hours' travel with no shovel, freezing wind - but sunny. Luckily a large truck came by about 15 minutes later and pulled us out - very dangerous. Other sites along the way include satellite dished gerts in the middle of nowhere and camels in the snow, plus for good measure a final sunset acoss the steppes.
On our last day in Mongolia we worked in the State Archive and the book behind George and I is the Secret History of the Mongols which is currently being translated by the Mongolians for the first time. The snappy looking fellow to the right is well dressed in a traditional dell with silk belt and fur hat. Unfortuately they could not take Mastercard and we had used all our cash so maybe another time I may be lucky enough to get one of these very warm coats.
